Sacramento Guitar Society News in 2016-17
The new year (July-June) started off with boost from the end of last year as SGS won very competitive grants from two major donors - the Teichert Foundation, $4,000, and the Mockingbird Foundation, $5,000.
Click on the logos above to learn more about their programs. More details about our use of the funds in outreach as they roll out this year - they are helping underwrite 85 100% scholarships for students in financial need and taking place at Sacramento Preparatory Music Academy.
Additionally, one of the prisoner programs at Folsom Prison, the Right Beat Music Program, chose SGS as beneficiary to their quarterly fundraising program to the tune of about $4000 coming later this summer.
July - Luthier Presentation
In July our monthly meetings kicked off with two presentations by Fort Bragg-based luthier, Brian Burns. It was the first chance in quite a while for luthiers to come out of their shops and meet in Sacramento and "talk shop" in an excellent environment. After working with the area luthiers, Brian spoke more generally to the public at the 3pm general meeting and Open Stage. In both segments, SGS Artistic Director Daniel Roest performed on the three instruments Brian brought with him to highlight the differences in construction methods. El Dorado Hills luthier Waylin Carpenter spoke also, and three of his instruments were performed on by Trio Seven, Mattherw Grasso, Matthew Foley and Harry Stoddard, all playing Waylin's seven-string models.
In August we again met at The Clara Auditorium. Here are pictures of the Sacramento Guitar Society Orchestra, working under the baton of Sean O'Connor.
