June 2015
Our Spring Concert featured the Sacramento Guitar Society Orchestra, directed by Sean O'Connor, supported by the Live Oak Waldorf School guitar class in Auburn, led by Nan Shaw, Raphael Carpenter, students of the Sac Prep Music Academy led by Ben McClara, and Daniel Roest. About 100 people were in the audience. After another successful year of concerts, classes, meetings, guitar orchestra rehearsals and performances, open mics, school visits, guitar donations, fundraising and organizing, SGS is planning on a similar trajectory for the 2015-16 season. Membership and donations are up, and our brand is more popular than ever. We think our combination of helping kids access guitar instruction, presenting high level concerts with internationally renowned artists, holding regular meetings for the public, and just hitting all areas of service to the community through the guitar works wonders for the Greater Sacramento Region. No other organization besides the South Bay Guitar Society does this in Northern California.
For 2015-16, Artistic Director Daniel Roest has selected two premier concerts at the Harris Center. In the Fall, a wonderful classical celebration with George Sakellariou will open with the rising young star in classical guitar, Jon Mendle. After five decades of entertaining audiences around the globe, world-renowned classical guitarist George Sakellariou still loves making music. Sakellariou will share his immense talent in a rare Northern California appearance on Saturday, October 24 at the Harris Center for the Arts in Folsom. And on Valentine's Weekend Two-Time Grammy Winning Steel-String Guitarist Laurence Juber is co-billed with Peppino D'Agostino, the “guitarist’s guitarist” (Acoustic Guitar Magazine), “a giant of the acoustic guitar” (San Diego Reader). D’Agostino was voted Best Acoustic Guitarist by Guitar Player Magazine readers in 2007. Don't miss these giants of the guitar!
Also planned are a Holiday Concert and Spring Concert with the Sacramento Guitar Society Orchestra, the only community guitar ensemble playing four-part classical arrangements that we know of in Northern California. And there will be another Young Artists Showcase, a chance for the best young (11-15) artists to shine. Open mics allow for opportunities to perform, and there are community service projects going all year long. And on May 11th 2016 we will return to the Music At Noon series at Westminster Presbyterian Church downtown. Return to this page in a few months for updates. Meanwhile, stay current with social media, including facebook and Twitter.
The December 13th FINGERSTYLE GUITAR WORKSHOP with GRAMMY winner MARK HANSON is history. If you missed it, not to worry, we'll have another next winter - watch for it. Mark's website
Fall 2015: Open Stage performances and Sacramento Guitar Society Orchestra rehearsals started back up in August at Sac Prep Music Academy. We presented George Sakellariou and Jon Mendle at a magnificent concert at Harris Center for the Arts, and December brought us a stellar Holiday Concert at CSUS Capistrano Hall and a fingerstyle guitar workshop with Mark Hanson.
