Hello,
The 2012 Parkening International Guitar Competition is actively seeking competitors. Please forward this information to your colleagues who might also be interested.
The competition is the most prestigious classical guitar competition in the world. Cash prizes in excess of $65,000 U.S. will be awarded, representing the largest prize purse of any classical guitar competition. It honors Christopher Parkening's lifetime commitment to fostering musical excellence in young artists as demonstrated by his mentor, the great Spanish guitarist Andres Segovia. It is held on the ocean-side campus of Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, where Mr. Parkening is Distinguished Professor of Music.
The Parkening International Guitar Competition will be held from May 30-June 2, 2012. Eligible classical guitarists ages 18-30 (born on or after May 29, 1982) are invited to apply.
The Parkening Young Guitarist Competition will be held on May 29 and May 30, 2012. It helps to identify outstanding young guitarists (17 years and younger) and encourages them to continue their performance careers and study.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Carson

Guitar at Southern Methodist University
I am writing on behalf of the Guitar Department at the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University. We would like to invite any guitar students you may know who are interested in pursuing their musical education at the undergraduate or graduate level to audition for the guitar program at Meadows.
Robert Guthrie, our guitar professor, has had an extensive career as both a performer and teacher. In his early years he studied with Andres Segovia, Alirio Diaz, Jose Tomas, and Jesus Silva. Besides guitar activities within the school, we have a partnership with the Allegro Guitar Society who brings internationally recognized guitarists to Dallas for performances and master classes. As Dallas/Ft. Worth is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the U.S. and has the largest urban arts district of any city in the world, many unique opportunities abound for guitarists.
While our tuition may appear to be expensive, our scholarship/financial packages are competitive with any of the other top music schools in the country. If you have students who are interested in this opportunity, they may contact Dr. Wagner or me. You may also find more information online at
Warm Regards,

From Giacomo Fiore :
Tangents 2012 Contemporary Guitar Series
Dear friends, I wanted to point your attention to Tangents 2012, a concert series dedicated to the contemporary guitar that I am curating with fellow director Steve Lin. We will have six acts, each performing on consecutive nights in South Bay (at the California Conservatory of Guitar in Santa Clara, and Spartan Memorial Chapel, SJSU) and San Francisco (at the Unitarian Universalist Society Chapel, 1187 Franklin) .
SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE FOR PROGRAM DETAILSAnnouncing Tangents 2012: Contemporary Guitar Series
March 16 (Santa Clara) and 17 (SF): Maarten Stragier (Berio, Donatoni, Vines)
April 6 (Santa Clara) and 7 (SF): Black Cedar (flute and guitar, Bartok, Takemitsu, Beaser)
April 27 (SJSU) and 28 (SF): The Living Earth Show (guitar and percussion, Ferneyhough, Stoffregen…)
May 18 (Santa Clara) and 19 (SF): Giacomo Fiore (Lou Harrison: Scenes from Nek Chand (Happy Birthday, Lou!)
Ron Nagorcka: Just Dance Toshio Hosokawa: Serenade Eve Beglarian: Until it Blazes
Larry Polansky: freeHorn)
June 8 (Santa Clara) and 9 (SF): Mobius Trio (Aminikia, Becker, Porter…)
June 29 (Santa Clara) and 30 (SF): Elliot Simpson (Carter, Murail, Tenney, Staern)
As you can see our series includes both soloists and chamber ensemble; the programs feature new commissions, a variety of musical languages and influences, microtonality and just intonation, and live electronic interfaces.
We are offering season passes (6 concerts at either SF or South Bay location, or mix and match) at the ridiculously low price of $50. Please consider purchasing a season pass to help us make this first season viable (and perhaps a new season possible!). Each concert's proceedings will go entirely to the artist(s) performing on that night. Individual tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, and $10 for students (please email me for student code).
Passes and tickets are available at Brown Paper Tickets:
We could also use some help spreading the word. Please forward this email to your friends, like us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter.
Finally, we have more information on the 2012 season (full programs, bios, and samples) on our website. Please make sure to also visit our sponsors, as they are really helping us take this series off the ground!
Thanks for your attention and for your support. We're putting a lot of work into this, and hopefully you will join us in celebrating the many and diverse sounds of the contemporary guitar soundscape.
Best,
Giacomo Fiore and Steve Lin - Tangents Guitar Series co-drectors
